If you’ve ever even casually perused the internet for a book recommendation, you’ve without a doubt stumbled upon Colleen Hoover. Her vast catalog of romance books has fed online book communities for years, and now we’re lucky enough to be living in the CoHo book-to-movie adaptation era. It Ends With Us made waves as a box office hit last year, viral clips of Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson filming Verity have graced our social media feeds, and now we’re finally getting a trailer for one of my personal favorite Colleen Hoover books: Regretting You.
Fans of Regretting You have been anxiously awaiting the trailer ever since the star-studded cast was announced. I mean, getting to watch Allison Williams, Dave Franco, Mason Thames, and McKenna Grace on our screens is reason enough to count down the days until the movie hits theaters. Thankfully, this week, Paramount Pictures finally graced us with the trailer—and even the hardest-to-please fans are more excited than ever after watching it. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film:
What is Regretting You about?
Like most of Colleen Hoover’s books, Regretting You blends heartwarming romance with a story so traumatic you’ll be praying for the characters’ therapy bills. It follows mother-daughter duo Clara (Grace) and Morgan (Williams) in the aftermath of a tragic accident that alters their family forever. In the wake of the death of her husband and sister, Morgan discovers their betrayal, and she’s left to pick up the messy pieces while trying to raise a grieving daughter. As Clara mourns the loss of two of the people closest to her, she forms a bond with her longtime crush, Miller (Thames).
The film is directed by Josh Boone—who you may recognize as the director of The Fault in Our Stars—so it’s safe to say you should definitely bring tissues to the theater. But the story isn’t only a tear-jerker; it’s just as much about the sweetness of your first love as it is about coming of age, complicated family dynamics, and grief.
Our reaction to the Regretting You trailer
Any reader knows that adaptations are tricky territory, because people are always on the edge of their seats, ready to whip out the “the book was better than the movie” card at a moment’s notice. But just from the trailer, I can already tell that card should be safely stowed away in the deck for Regretting You. Regardless of how unrelatable their circumstances may be, everyone will be able to see themselves in these characters—whether it’s Clara’s rebellion as she tries to discover who she is, or Morgan grappling with how to be a mom to a teenager while still holding on to herself in the process. The chemistry between Mason Thames and McKenna Grace as Miller and Clara, and the raw honesty in Allison Williams’ portrayal of Morgan, is glaringly apparent in just a two-minute and 30-second trailer. I can’t wait to see what it looks like in a full-length feature film.
When does Regretting You come out?
I know we all wish the movie dropped immediately so we could binge-watch it as soon as we finished the trailer, but thankfully, we don’t have to wait a full year. Regretting You hits theaters on October 24.
