Ariana Grande might be making her rounds as Glinda the Good Witch over the last several months, but she certainly hasn't forgotten her own original music that fans are itching for.
In a recent interview with Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast, the Wicked star opened up about the whirlwind year she's had after starring in one of the biggest films of 2024, along with the highly-anticipated sequel coming later this year. While Grande's been trotting the globe wearing Glinda-pink and speaking about her love of musical theater, she also shared new insight about her own music and what's to come.
Grande released her seventh studio album Eternal Sunshine in March 2024 and it has since become a critical and commercial success. Arianators fawned over the vulnerability of the album — which seems to deal with her feelings post-divorce from Dalton Gomez — along with the old-school Ariana Grande feel that popped up in several songs. When asked if fans could expect a deluxe version of the album, Grande said: “Oh, she exists!”
“It’s a very special project,” Grande said of the album. “I’m out there so much right now. I want to let my children miss me for two seconds. I’m excited to surprise them with it at some point, but I’m still mulling over the timing in my head.
“It’s not the end of ‘Peaches’ just yet, but she’s going in the closet for a minute,” Grande said, referring to the character Peaches she plays in the music video for “We Can't Be Friends.” Peaches decides to completely erase her memory of an ex-lover, drawing inspiration from the film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
“The album is so concise, and I didn’t want to add songs just for the sake of it," Grande continued. "The new tracks are short, but they really count.”
After she released Eternal Sunshine, Grande was almost immediately swept up into a lengthy press junket for Wicked, leaving her little time to promote her project or tour the songs. Grande revealed she was “considering a mini-tour” between the Wicked films, but ultimately decided to “prioritize acting for now.”
“Performing will always be a part of my life, but I want to focus on this chapter of storytelling through film," she said.
In the full interview, Ariana Grande also teased the new original song that she sings in the Wicked sequel, Wicked For Good. The song was written by Stephen Schwartz, the composer of the original Broadway musical, and is a “pivotal moment in Glinda’s journey.”
“It shows a side of her we’ve never seen before," Grande said. “In the stage show, this transformation happens offstage. But in the movie, we get to see her make the decision that defines who she is. It’s a privilege to sing this song and be the first Glinda to bring it to life.”
Wicked For Good will be released on November 21, 2025.
