Super Heroes – Reliable Magic + Idiot Plot = Fridge Logic; Unreliable Magic + Idiot

Some early reviews are panning *Doctor Strange 2* because 90% of the audience knew more about Doctor Strange comics than the scriptwriters did, and these comic book fans are pointing out that Doctor Strange did not use his known, established tactics in a reasonable way, and also that the magic did not obey rules set down in previous movies.

I have not seen it yet, but it appears to be a case of an [Idiot Plot](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IdiotPlot) story with two kinds of magic -- sorcery and witchcraft -- that obey different rules at different times.

The show *Wandavision* mostly avoided this because Wanda's powers in that show were mostly controlled by her unconscious mind. Thus if her powers were irrational, that was to be expected, because her subconscious mind is operated by monsters from her id, not her conscience.

The *Doctor Strange 2* movie is suffering from [Fridge Logic](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FridgeLogic) because everyone expected Doctor Strange's powers to be highly reliable and most people expected Doctor Strange himself to have transcendent, cosmic wisdom and insight from reading all the books ever.

I submit that this kind of story would not have seemed so illogical if it had been established that *all* the magic, sorcery, and witchcraft was always *unreliable*. This is not so believable in a sci-fi story about well-engineered tools, but it is very believable in a semi-mystical story about supernatural stuff. If magic always operates according to the fickle, unknowable whims of unknown gods and spirits, then it would make sense that wizards and witches can't use tactics properly. They might *try* to cast the right spell, but it might be unavailable or inoperative because spirits are fickle.

Unreliable magic cannot fix *every* tactical problem in *Doctor Strange 2*. At one point, several non-magical superheroes stand around doing nothing while their friends are getting mangled. That kind of tactical stupidly cannot be explained away with fickle spirits.
