Legislative branch updates:

Kevin McCarthy elected Speaker of the House: After 15 rounds of voting, Kevin McCarthy officially became speaker of the House late last Friday night. His election came after several days of negotiations with a group of far-right conservative lawmakers from the House Freedom Caucus (HFC), who won several key concessions. These include making it easier to remove the speaker, commitments to fight for stringent cuts to government spending, and more spots on top committees for HFC members.
Foxx back as chair of Education and the Workforce Committee: On Monday, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) was chosen to chair the House Education and the Workforce Committee again after receiving a term-limits waiver. (The committee’s name has changed from Education and Labor to Education and the Workforce, as is customary when the chamber switches from Democratic to Republican control.)
New House Labor-H chair: Kay Granger, chair of the House Appropriations Committee, is expected to propose Robert Aderholt (R-AL) as the new chair of the Labor HHS-Education subcommittee. Tom Cole (R-OK), who was the top Republican on the subcommittee, would move to the Transportation-HUD subcommittee.

Executive branch updates: HHS announced $245 million in new youth mental health grants, stemming from funding in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
